I have finally strengthened my essay in response to Simon’s comments. In particular I’ve added some detail to explain what I see as the natural relationship between the various series that make up much of Hatakeyama’s work, added some further discussion on how it relates to the New Topographics concept and some illustrations to show the relationships to Friedrich’s sublime.
I have previously addressed the level to which he can be considered influential in a post on this blog, and in a separate resource page which covers a range of references over and above those cited in the essay.
